The war between Apple and Samsung is definitely on now that the Samsung Galaxy S3 seems to be gaining hype at an alarming rate. This is in contrast to the position of the 4S last year which did appear to have the edge over the S2 in terms of popularity. So is the Samsung Galaxy S3 really better than the 4S or is it all hype? Let’s take a look…
iPhone 4S vs Samsung Galaxy S3
Screen: The Samsung Galaxy S3 has a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED HD 720 x 1280p touchscreen and the iPhone 4S has a 3.5 inch Retina 960 x 640 screen. With a bigger display S3 is definitely a better choice, but the handset it a little larger due to the screen so little hands may find it a struggle to use at times. However this is a small compromise for a big, vivid display. Winner? The Samsung Galaxy S3.
Design: The Samsung Galaxy S3 is 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6mm and is 133g. The 4S on the other hand is 115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3mm and 140g. So here the S3 is obviously on the larger side, yet it is thinner and lighter than the iPhone 4S. However with Apple’s keen eye for design and build quality, as you might expect the 4S looks and feels as expensive as it is. The better device here is the iPhone 4S.
Performance & Power: The S3 has a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and 2GB RAM (US models), whilst the 4S has a 800MHz dual-core A5 processor with 512MB RAM. Although the 4S does work smoothly, the S3 is more powerful and the difference can be felt when carrying out CPU intensive tasks like running HD videos via an overlay and using other applications simultaneously.
Camera: Whilst both the Samsung Galaxy S3 and 4S can boast an 8MP rear-facing camera, the camera on the S3 has zero shutter lag and burst mode. It also had a 1.9MP front-facing camera whilst the 4S has only 0.3MP on their front-facing camera.
Battery: The Samsung Galaxy S3 battery is 2,100mAh to the 4S’s 1420mAh. This means more standby time for the S3, and also the S3 battery is removable. Points go to the Samsung Galaxy S3.
To conclude, the S3 seems head and shoulders above the 4S, but then again the S3 was only released this summer and is obviously aimed to compete with the upcoming iPhone 5. Nevertheless, if you’re looking to upgrade now, both smartphones are a great option albeit S3 has the clear advantage right now.
