Can iPhone 5 Bring Anything More Than Galaxy S3 Already Has?

With the Samsung Galaxy S3 being the smartphone-of-the-moment, with its lovely aesthetics and great specs, Apple’s iPhone 5 is going to have to be something special to catch up to the lead the S3 already has. Here is a little comparison just to get an idea of whether Apple has a chance at blowing the S3 out of the water based on what we’ve seen circulating around so far.

iPhone 5 rumored specs vs confirmed specs of the Samsung Galaxy S3

Display: The Samsung Galaxy S3 has a 4.8 inch Super AMOLED screen with 310ppi and a 1280 x 720p display. People are expecting a 4 inch Retina display on the iPhone 5 with 367ppi and 1280 x 720p resolution. Despite the iPhone 5 said to have a much higher pixel density, the 310ppi on the Samsung Galaxy S3 would theoretically suffice the untrained eye (i.e. unless you plan on going on a pixel hunt).

Processor: On the US version, the Samsung Galaxy S3 has a 1.5GHz Snapdragon dual-core processor. Given that Apple stuck with a dual-core processor in order to ensure the New iPad 3 would support 4G LTE, we may see a dual-core chipset in the iPhone 5 too.

Camera: The 8MP rear-facing camera and zero shutter lag on the Samsung Galaxy S3 is impressive and identical to the S2 in megapixel count. The iPhone 5 is rumored to also remain at 8-megapixels although its front facing camera may support HD for FaceTime calls. The S3 of course has a 1.9MP shooter up front.

Storage: The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes in 3 options: 16GB, 32GB and 64GB, just like every past iPhone model has. So the iPhone 5 is also rumored to follow suit. However the Samsung Galaxy S3 has one advantage, additional expandable memory of up to 64GB via the microSD slot.

So it looks like the iPhone 5 may not exactly blow the Samsung Galaxy S3 away in terms of hardware but merely match it if the rumors serve true. What this could mean is that choice will boil down to whether you prefer Android OS or Apple’s iOS. While Android Ice Cream Sandwich is certainly impressive on the Samsung Galaxy S3, the iPhone 5 will rollout with iOS 6 that boasts 200 new features including turn-by-turn navigation and an improved Siri.
