iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3: A Taste Of Things To Come

One of the biggest battles in the world of smartphones this year will be between the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the iPhone 5, when it is released. So should you purchase the S3 or should you wait for fall and get the latest incarnation of the iPhone?

Bearing in mind that what is considered to be innovative today will be surpassed very quickly when it comes to the competitive smartphone industry. So while the Samsung Galaxy S3 has the crown as one of the fastest handsets right now, this could all change when the iPhone 5 is released. The folks over at MobileNApps have prepared a short comparison between the specs of the Samsung Galaxy S3 and those rumored to be coming to the iPhone 5. Now given that nothing has been confirmed about the iPhone 5 to date (not even its name), we would take M&A’s raised points purely for entertainment purposes.

Samsung Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 5 (comparison)

The display of the Samsung Galaxy S3 will be hard to beat at 4.8-inches and Super AMOLED technology with a pixel resolution of 1280 x 720 and ppi of 310. The iPhone 4S comes with 330 ppi and it has been suggested that this will be boosted up to 367ppi with the latest iPhone 5. It is speculated that the display will be 1280 x 720 resolution and should be at least 4 inch, so maybe it will be able to measure up to the S III.

The processor on the Samsung Galaxy S3 is a Snapdragon S4 1.5GHz in the US, with 2GB of RAM. The international versions of the handset have the quad core Exynos 1.4GHz and 1GB of RAM. Rumors have been flying around that the iPhone 5 will have the A5X chipset as seen on the iPad, but we will have to wait and see.

The camera on the Samsung Galaxy S3 is 8 megapixels with zero shutter lag, burst mode and panoramic shooting; there is also a camera on the front for video calling. The iPhone 4S comes with an 8 megapixel camera too, and it is thought that the iPhone 5 would also come with same amount of megapixels but possibly improved low-light shooting abilities.

The Galaxy S3 will be hard to beat storage wise as it is offered in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB options and there is also room for expansion thanks to an SD card slot. It is thought that the iPhone 5 will have the same internal storage choices but no external expansion just like every other iPhone model to date.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 runs on Android ICS with the TouchWiz overlay and the iPhone 5 should have the latest iOS 6 when it lauches. The S3 comes with S Voice, S Beam, Smart Stay, Direct Call, Smart Alert and Pop up Play while the iPhone 5 should come with Siri 2.0, Face Unlock and Universal Remote Control, among other boasted features we heard from iOS 6. The S3 will be updated to the latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean too however it may take some time as Samsung are slow when it comes to updates (Q4 2012 targeted).

The S3 has support for 4G LTE, which gains an edge over the iPhone 4S, but this may not be for long as the iPhone 5 is thought to have support for 4G LTE too just like the New iPad ‘3’ did.

All of the major carriers in the US offer the Samsung Galaxy S3. The iPhone 5 should be available on AT&T, Verizon and Sprint for starters. The S3 16GB has been priced at $199 on a two year contract, which is the same as the iPhone 4S 16GB entry model. So we can expect the 16GB iPhone 5 to follow suit.

In conclusion it will be a hard decision to have to make a decidion if the iPhone 5 is all that it is cracked up to be when it is revealed. If you need to get a handset now then the S3 is your best bet, on the other hand if you can afford to wait, the iPhone 5 with all its bells and whistles, may be worth hanging back for.
