Google Maps vs iOS 6 Map App: Which Is Better?

With Apple’s announcement that they had chosen to send the Google Maps app in the iPhone packing and instead go for their own 3D Maps app in iOS 6, the folks over at Gizmodo thought they would do a side by side comparison of the two to find out which one is better.

New iOS 6 Maps app vs Google Maps for iPhone

The Apple’s map app promises lots of features, such as Flyover and Turn by Turn directions. However Google have been the master of maps for many years, so how does Apple fair against them? After all, to kick out one of the best map apps you really should have something superb up your sleeve with its replacement. So Gizmodo put it to the test. Here were their results.

With the side by side comparison of lower Manhattan it quickly becomes clear that Google are the ones to provide more information when it comes down to street names, major streets and street directions. When zoomed out Google again provides plenty of information which is better than a lack of information in favor of looking pretty i.e. the iOS 6 Maps app. At the moment Apple have some serious issues with traffic views on their Maps app and Cupertino aims to lean on users heavily to find out where gridlocks are.

When it comes to directions both apps are superb and Apple maps have the advantage over Google thanks to their turn by turn feature looking much more prettier. On the downside Apple needs public transit directions added before the launch of iOS 6. On the satellite view it is Google that come out on top again thanks to more information at all levels. Street View is missing from Apple though they do have the Flyover which is very nice, but not something you would use every day.

Apple needs to make some major improvements to their maps app if they are to get people agreeing with them that they made the right choice in kicking Google Maps to the curb. At the moment the upgrade doesn’t really seem to be much of an upgrade at all, concludes Gizmodo.
