The Samsung Galaxy S3 is without a doubt the most anticipated Android smartphone of 2012. While it may naturally appear to be the best phone to buy on the market at the moment, it depends on which market you are looking at.
Samsung Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 4S: things look different in emerging markets
As the folks over at ZeeNews in India (ZNI) point out, consumers in India may have two minds about the Samsung Galaxy S3, as would many other emerging markets in Asia.
In New Delhi, the phone is out already and there has been mixed responses about it. One of these is to do with the cost of the handset. In India the phone is on the market for Rs 43,000 and many are saying that the proportion of features on the phone to the price Samsung are asking for the device, is not rational.
Samsung have beaten Nokia to the number one spot when it comes to phone technology but Apple are still classed as being champions in regards to value for money from a phone in India. If the Samsung Galaxy S3 had been cheaper it could have contented with the iPhone 4S in India, reports the national News station. Both devices are only a few rupees apart from each other in pricing.
Finally there is the matter that the Galaxy S3 looks almost the same as the S2 model and has almost the same features. We are guessing they are refering to certain specs like the 1GB RAM and 8-megapixel camera (the latter of course features an improved sensor though). In India the price difference is around fifteen thousand rupees between the Galaxy S3 and S2, so is it really worth paying out all that extra just to have the latest incarnation of the handset? According to ZNI, not in India.
While it may be difficult to digest this information give that it seems very subjective, we only have to look back at last year’s battle between the Samsung Galaxy S2 and iPhone 4S to understand it. The iPhone 4S beat the Samsung Galaxy S2 in terms of sales despite the S2 winning best smartphone of the year award at MWC 2012. We always found that the Galaxy S2 had an edge over the iPhone 4S in terms of hardware but you can’t argue with the appeal of the Apple brand and just how much more simple it is to use iOS over Android for first-time users.
This may also end up being the reason why the iPhone 5 will beat the Samsung Galaxy S3 in terms of worldwide sales this year. We’ve already seen Android beat iPhone in terms of sales here in the US, but Samsung may be a long way from making that happen against the iPhone globally.
