Samsung Galaxy Note Rival Hits CTIA, Ridiculously Low Price Tag

While we’ve seen devices like the Samsung Galaxy S3, HTC One X, HTC DROID Incredible 4G LTE and Motorola DROID RAZR MAXX unveiled this year, their rivalry seems to leave one other flagship Android smartphone unharmed – the Samsung Galaxy Note.

Plum Mobile Might: Samsung Galaxy Note rival boasts $180 price tag

The likely reason behind this is that it is the only ‘phablet’ on the market. Want a screen larger than 5-inches? The Galaxy Note packs a 720p HD 5.3-inch Super AMOLED Display. Want advances stylus support? The Samsung Galaxy Note has S-Pen capabilities.

Despite the Samsung Galaxy Note proving critics wrong and selling over 5 million units in the past 5 months, alongside many eager Verizon users waiting for a possibly CDMA variant, we have yet to see any other manufacturer try and match the Galaxy Note. Well that’s until now.

The folks over at Engadget managed to get their hands on the Might by Plum Mobile. Now the first thing you will notice is that it is a doppleganger for the Samsung Galaxy Note. Running Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread just like the Samsung Galaxy Note, its custom UI is a good mix of HTC Sense, TouchWiz and stock Android 2.3.6. As Engadget put it, the device really looks like a “rebranded Galaxy Note”

Boasting a 5-inch display which is slightly smaller than the Samsung Galaxy Note but a battery that is slightly larger (2,800mAh vs 2,500mAh), the real selling point here is its $180 approximate price tag. There are some other trade-offs as well as you would expect with a device of this size but Plum Mobile tries and fill them with other features e.g. it only has a 5-megapixel shooter but it is dual-SIM capable.

No word yet on when it will be available in US stores. Given that the display unit was running on T-Mobile, it will likely be compatible with AT&T bands as well so Verizon and Sprint users may be left behind once again when it comes to phablets. We’ll keep you posted as more develops.
