We’re now at the last few hours before the Samsung Galaxy S3 will make its world debut. Touted as the best Android smartphone of 2012, the hype behind it is unprecedented. In fact, it matches one other smartphone on the market which has never failed to capture headlines despite there being little to no real confirmation of it – the iPhone 5.

So how do these two superphones stand against each other? Given that there is no confirmed specs on either one of these devices, this would be the last time we could do a mythical comparison between both. So let’s see where they stand:
The Samsung Galaxy S3 and iPhone 5 are both expected to get a serious boost over their predecessors in the processors department. We saw the dual-core setup in the New iPad 3 annihilate the competition and once again, the iPhone 5 is expected to follow suit with its hardware setup. While it may not be able to match the quad-core 1.8GHz Exynos setup rumored on paper for the Samsung Galaxy S3, Apple’s vertical integration between their iTunes app store, iTunes for music and movies, software created by developers specifically for their phone, will without a doubt give that buttery smooth experience we can expect from high-end devices.
Moving on to design, the iPhone 4S still stands out as one of the most gorgeous looking smartphones on the market. Samsung however have slowly started to create an identity of their own with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. And if rumors of a Galaxy S3 with a ceramic body similar to the finishing of Rado Watches hold true, then we may finally see the Galaxy range deviate from cheap plastics towards something more high-end. Given that both devices are expected to be redesigned from ground up, this may be too close to call.
Display: The Samsung Galaxy S3 is rumored to go with a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED III HD display while the iPhone 5 with a 4.6-inch Retina Display. Both are massive screens with high resolutions and covered in Gorilla Glass. The difference here will be AMOLED vs LCD. This is a matter of preference as many find the blacks in AMOLED unbeatable, while others are put off by its warmer color tones compared to the cooler blues of the iPhone screen.
Camera: The Samsung Galaxy S2 and iPhone 4S currently sit at the top when it comes to their camera. If rumors hold true, both will get 12-megapixel shooters (both currently sit on 8MP) with 1080p video recording. The real test will come down to low-light captures and color saturation which can only be tested when both devices are readily available on the market.
Battery life: Given that the Samsung Galaxy S3 and iPhone 5 are expected to come to the US market sporting LTE radios, concerns for battery life are expected. Samsung showed us how it was making progress with dismissing the bad reputation Android devices have with battery life with its Samsung Galaxy Note. The Galaxy Note holds a 2,500mAh battery and got us through a day of moderate to heavy usage on single charge. So if rumors of a 3,050mAh battery in the Samsung Galaxy S3 hold true, there should be nothing to worry about. As for the iPhone 5, the iPhone range has been heralded for its battery life. In fact, Apple’s first attempt with an LTE device, the New iPad 3, showed us that the tablet was capable of operating and an LTE mobile hotspot for 23 hours on a single charge. Those are some serious bragging rights as well. If the iPhone 5 is as massive as rumors suggest (4.6-inch screen), then Apple should have no problem housing a larger battery inside.
