Samsung Galaxy S3 Went Quad-Core As It Sounds Cooler, Sacrifices Battery Life?

The latest leak about the Samsung Galaxy S3 may have fans a little peeved. A Samsung employee has gone ahead and informed Asian newspaper “Asia Today” that Samsung went ahead with the old Cortex-A9 core and Exynos 4412 for the Samsung Galaxy S3 because a quad-core would sell better in terms of marketing. This is depsite the next-gen Cortex-A15 based dual-core Exynos 5250 being as fast as its older quad-core predecessor in addition to having new features and better battery life. Not mention the new features and lower power consumption.

The Galaxy S3 blog went on and dug up this official Samsung announcement dated Nov 30th 2011 to reference the capabilities:

“Samsung’s new dual-core ARM Cortex-A15 based application processor, the Exynos 5250, is capable of processing 14 billion instructions per second (DMIPS, Dhrystone million instructions per second) at 2.0GHz, nearly doubling the performance over a current state of the art Cortex-A9-based dual core processor running at 1.5GHz capable of 7,500 DMIPS.”

We know that the Tegra 3 quad-core processor on the HTC One X is not as powerful as the dual-core Snapdragon S4 in the HTC EVO 4G LTE. However despite recent benchmarks proving this, it is difficult to shake off the mentality that “more is better”.

Samsung Galaxy S3: Real world performance vs marketing

Do you think that Samsung has put its priorities in the wrong place? Should the be more concerned about the best marketing angle or higher performance? We’ve seen how important marketing is when it comes to products like the iPhone.
