While the Tata Nano has received much acclaim for being the cheapest car in the world despite not being made available in any other markets except for India to date, it is still a title that many automakers wish to beat.
Bajaj RE60 is smaller & cheaper than the Tata Nano
In what appears to be direct competition to the Tata Nano, Bajaj has a little surprise for the auto industry this year when they will unveil the Bajaj RE60. Expected to be both cheaper and smaller than the Tata Nano, it will be unveiled at the 2012 New Delhi Auto Expo.
Just like the Tata Nano, the Bajaj RE60 will be targeted solely at the Indian market and will come right off Bajaj’s own local factory line after the abandoned collaboration plans with Renault-Nissan.
According to Bajaj, the RE60 will be ideal from crowded Indian streets and will feature a tiny 200cc, single cylinder petrol engine with a max speed of 70km/h. It will naturally be very eco-friendly to with only 60g/km of CO2 emissions.
Despite its many similarities with the Tata Nano, Bajaj states that they are not after the minicar’s share. Instead their target is 3-wheelers like rickshaws which they hope will upgrade to the RE60.
