Euro 6 emissions standards? What is that? All new cars sold must meet the Euro 6 standards for exhaust emissions of NOx and other pollutants. Currently, all UK and EU cars are tested via the new European driving cycle (NEDC) procedure, where emissions are measured under laboratory conditions on rolling roads.
From September 2015, all new cars bought must be Euro 6 compliant. The aim of the Euro 6 EU legislation is to make cars cleaner, so that lower levels of harmful cars and van exhaust emissions like the carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxide (NOx), particulate matter (PM) and hydrocarbons (THC and NHMC) which is hazardous.
There are different standards for petrol and diesel cars. For petrol cars, the limit for NOx remains at 60mg/km that is similar to the Euro 5 standard. Diesel cars on the other hand, drops the permitted NOx level to a maximum of 80mg/km as compared to the 180mg/km level that is required for cars to meet the previous Euro 5 emissions standards.
This is quite a serious issue that needs to be addressed to all car users. Because of that reason, the automotive industry and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) have recently come out in defence of diesel cars and start a campaign to raise awareness of the clean diesel technology.
