Volkswagen has confirmed that it is developing the New Midsize Coupe (NMC) concept that was unveiled back at the last Beijing Auto Show. The car will be based on the VW Jetta but is going to be smaller than the VW CC.
VW described the NMC as an avant-garde leader in a new compact sedan class. Such a description implies that the car in development will surely be in direct competition with the Mercedes GLA Class.
VW revealed that the NMC will be produced in the company’s facility at Mexico. When the car make its debut in 2016, it will surely be introduced in the US due to the nation’s close proximity with Mexico.
On the other hand, VW Group has already planted the Audi A3 there and releasing the NMC in the US might hurt the compact sedan’s sales. The only way not to stir things up is through carefully panning the pricing for the NMC.
Since the car is built like the Jetta, VW teased that it is going to be really affordable to own. By far, the NMC will be cheaper than the VW CC. Even so, the NMC is completed with features like heavily curved roofline, frameless doors and notchback-style rear.
