Mercedes G-Code Concept: A Revolutionary EV In The Makings

In commemoration of the new Mercedes-Benz R&D centre which had just opened in Beijing, China, the German carmaker teases on a new concept vehicle called the G-Code. The vehicle is revealed to have a design that is tailored for the local Chinese market.

Mercedes shared an image of the G-Code and it looks like a 2-door compact crossover coupe. Size-wise, the vehicle is smaller than the GLA-Class which means that it is a perfect competitor for the Mini Cooper Countryman and the Audi Q1.

Of course, things are still pretty raw for the G-Code, so don’t expect it to arrive anytime soon. However, it does come with a lot of promises like revolutionary design elements and technologies.

Mercedes revealed that its powertrain consists of an internal combustion engine running on hydrogen at the front axle and an electric motor at the rear. The system is capable of multiple driving modes including a sport mode.

Like most EV motors, the G-Code can be charged on an average wall socket. What is special about the vehicle is its energy recovery system. There will be a multi-voltaic paint which behaves like a solar panel by converting sunlight into electrical energy.

On the downside of things, these are the only information revealed at the moment. The G-Code concept is confirmed to be coming to the 2014 LA Auto Show at the end of this month and we can expect Mercedes-Benz to spill more beans then.
