Mazda has announced that its all-new Mazda RX-9 will make its debut on October 28 (yes, it is happening soon) at Tokyo motor show. Speculation about the car’s identity concentrates on two possibilities; a concept previewing Mazda’s hotly-anticipated new-generation rotary-powered sports coupe, which is to be called the RX-9 or a hard-top variant of the new MX-5 roadster.
In fact, Mazda is going to replace for the RX-7 and RX-8 rotary coupes, following a steer pointing to another car on Mazda’s Tokyo. In comparison to the Cosmo Sport, which is also known as the 110S, the radical Cosmo Sport was the world’s largest mass-production rotary coupe.
Mazda’s previous rotary car, the 1.3-liter RX-8 four-door coupe were produced in 2012. The Mazda RX-8 was a blast to drive and revved to 9000rpm, but it used too much oil and petrol because of the lack in mid-range torque. To overcome the issue, Mazda is currently testing a new hybrid turbo rotary powerplant.
Furthermore, to improve fuel economy and emissions, Mazda is going to incorporate homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) to be the centrepiece of the second-generation SKYACTIV powertrain suite. Therefore, we will wait and see whether the concept car will have many fans or otherwise.
