Hot hatchbacks have always made it big in the automotive industry due to their ease of use, reliability and efficiency. Up until today, it is the Ford Fiesta, Toyota Yaris and the Peugeot 208 which have been the best-selling small cars in the world but between the trios, which is the best?
Price-wise, the Peugeot 208 is the cheapest as it retails at only £14,795. The Fiesta comes in second at £15,795 and the Yaris is the most costly at £15,595. However, it is the Yaris that offers the best resale value after three years at 47.3% of its price.
All three hatchbacks operate on the FWD system. The Fiesta, in particular, is powered by 1L 3-cylinder EcoBoost engine that is mated to a 6-speed twin clutch transmission. The Yaris, on the other hand, runs on the 1.5L 4-Cylinder mill that is fixed to a CVT transmission. Then there is the 208 which drives on the 1.2L 3-Cylinder engine controlled by a 5-speed AMT transmission.
The Yaris might have the biggest engine capacity but it is still the most fuel efficient of the trio. The hatchback recorded 42.2mpg, which are more than the 41.7mpg from the Fiesta and the 37.2mpg from the 208.
The Fiesta, on the other hand, offers the best performance. It can achieve knots to 60mph in just 9.6s, beating the 11.6s from the Yaris and the 13.8s recorded by the 208. The American hatchback might have the smallest engine capacity but it is the fastest of them all. The Fiesta has a top speed of 112mph which is faster than the Yaris’ 103mph and the 208’s 111mph.
Based on the stats above, we feel that the Fiesta is the best of them all. It is stylish and powerful. While it is not as efficient as the Yaris, the Fiesta is still one of the most fuel savvy hatchbacks around. As for Peugeot, they really need to make some big changes to the 208 to compete with the best.
