BMW announced today that they have been developing tyres made of carbon fibres and it is expected to be ready in 2017. The German carmaker revealed that carbon fibre is 50% lighter than steel and 30% lighter than aluminium, thus making it an ideal development.
This is because the carbon fibre wheels will aid in reducing the weight of the future cars. In other words, performance will be enhanced and so will the fuel economy of future BMW vehicles.
Some might doubt the durability and cost-effectiveness of carbon fibre tyres but BMW was quick to give a feedback. The German carmaker claims that the newly-engineered carbon fibre will be as strong as steel and it is made up of production waste to keep the price at its minimum.
Of course, BMW is not the first in utilizing carbon fibre wheels but they will be the pioneer carmaker to utilize homemade tyres. We will definitely learn more on the matter when the tyres steps out of development in a couple of years’ time.
