Volkswagen is probably the biggest automotive firm in the world right now but it is unfortunate that the VW Passat is growing poorer with every new model. This is evident with the latest Passat as it failed to give rival premium sedans a run for its money.
There isn’t a lot wrong with the new Passat. It came out with a spectacular design, polished dynamics and also tons of technologies to offer. Furthermore, the new Passat is bigger and lighter, thus making it more comforting and fuel economical at the same time.
Retailing at £35,000, the Passat is best compared to the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes C-Class and the Audi A4. However, its standards are below that and are more fitting to rival the Ford Mondeo and Mazda 6.
Built on the MQB platform, the Passat exhibits the best handling around as it impressed us with its dynamics and great traction. The Passat is towed we tested is towed by a 2L TDI diesel engine that gave us 187hp in hand. This emits only 106g/km of CO2 and returns 52.3mpg of fuel mileage.
The Passat is also more sophisticated as it now has charging points for the rear seat passengers and more space to offer. Even the boot space is bumped up even more.
In short, the Volkswagen Passat is truly a great vehicle to own but due to its identity as a non-luxury vehicle, many will find the £35,000 price tag a bit too much for their liking. This is an issue VW will have to bear since they have Audi to promote their luxury bits.
