Mazda has confirmed that it will be launching the Mazda 2 in the coming months in Europe and earlier today, the Japanese carmaker announced on the sort of powertrain coming with the vehicle.
The Mazda 2 will be offered with three petrol engine and one diesel engine choices. All the motors are revealed to be Euro-6 compliant. Of course, most consumers will surely fix their sights on the diesel mill, which is the new SkyActiv-D 1.5 that is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox.
It is further detailed that the diesel engine has a low compression, quiet low-knock operation and superior ignition and cold-start capabilities like the 2.2L SkyActiv Diesel mill. On the downside of things, the 1.5L variant won’t come with twin-turbo but instead, a single turbocharger.
Regardless, the 1.5L diesel motor is definitely worth looking forward to. After all, it is said to return approximately 69.2mpg while emitting only 89g/km of CO2. Furthermore, the engine generates 104hp and 162lb-ft of torque. This will surely enable the supermini Mazda 2 to sprint from 0-62mph in just 10.1mph, while also having a top speed of 110mph.
As for the petrol engines, all three of them have a 1.5L capacity that produces 74hp, 89hp and 113hp respectively. The top of the line 113hp engine comes with the i-ELOOP braking technology that recycles energy, hence improving fuel consumption to 48mpg.
The 1.5L mill is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission and it enables the Mazda 2 to sprint from 0-62mph in just 8.7 seconds. There is also a top speed of 124mph.
All in all, there is a lot of potential for the upcoming Mazda 2. The car is already named this year’s Japan car of the year and now, it looks to cement its name in the global market.
