2015 BMW M-Series Models Will Downgrade To 4-cyclinders Only?

Air pollution has been on a sharp incline for so long now and car makers are being forced to abide by new environmental guidelines. BMW won’t be any different as the German car manufacturer plans to cut the engine size of its M-Series in the future.

As disappointing as it may sound to all the M-series’ fans, BMW confirmed that they are looking to escape from the traditional inline-six and V8 engines to that of a four-cylinder.

BMW M chief of product management, Carsten Pries, revealed that the future M3 will be powered by a four-cylinder engine. Of course, the car’s mass will be reduced.

Pries further added that the performance of the car will be improved with the mass cut. He continued that the most important aspect here is to achieve better fuel consumption and carbon emission.

This basically means that BMW will be inputting a smaller engine but will try to bring out the best performance by cutting down on the bulky aspect of the M-series. Both the M3 and M4 will be launched in 2020, which is 6 years from now. There is plenty of time for the German engineers to work with the four-cylinder engine.

On the other hand, this will be a major challenge for the engine developers as they have to try and create one that can offer 400hp. This is not impossible as rival Mercedes and AMG has managed to create 360hp out of the A45 AMG.
