The 4Runner badge from Toyota has long existed in the automobile industry as one of the world’s leading large SUV. Now, the vehicle has been refreshed with an all-new model and we managed to get behind the wheel of it.
Prior to entering the 4Runner, we noticed that it is so much bigger than the Ford Explorer and also the perfect rival for the Nissan Pathfinder. The 4Runner comes equipped with chunky tyres on a boxy structure that gives off and overall solid look.
In terms of design, the SUV sports a super-huge grille that is shaped like the old Aston Martin One-77. Also, the 4Runner comes with a raised ground clearance that enables it to take on a 33-degrees climb. This makes the 4Runner a powerful candidate for an off-road adventure.
Inside the cabin, the 4Runner we tested does not have anything to be proud off. Everything is kept to its basics like a 4-spoke steering wheel, plastic finish and switches resting at the centre console. For something more premium and high quality, consumers can opt for the Limited Edition model.
The 4WD architecture, however, is something new and updated. There is now a transfer case that allowed us to drive on 4WD temporarily or at all times. The 4Runner we tested is powered by a 4.0-liter V6 that is brought over from its predecessor. The powertrain generates 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft. With such a big motor that offers satisfactory power, we were quite surprised when we learned that the 4Runner returns a fuel consumption range of 17-22mpg.
The 4Runner is certainly something impressive from Toyota. The vehicle retails at $33,010 and it is truly the perfect SUV for those that are looking for something solid, durable and rugged. It is important for consumers to not hope for something fancy to feature on the 4Runner as the SUV is not built to accommodate but instead, built to get the job done.
