2014 Mazda CX-5 Review: A Perfect SUV In A Long While

The latest Mazda CX-5 has bagged countless awards for being the greatest SUV this year. Despite that fact, many are not thrilled for the CX-5 and gave off mixed reaction. Perhaps, most of you are not aware on the greatness of the CX-5.

Well, we were once just like you but after sitting behind the wheel of the CX-5, we decided to change our opinion on the car. The SUV might not come with the best of design but it didn’t quite bother us much as the CX-5 still looks decent.

The important thing about the CX-5 is with the mechanical parts resting under the hood. We tested the 2.2L 4-cylinder SkyActiv model, which is something that has been constantly reiterated by Mazda as something revolutionary. The SkyActiv technology has been the talk in town due to its ability to optimize performance while also keeping fuel consumption at its minimum.

So we set off on a short lap around the city and that is when we realized that the CX-5 offers a more dynamic feel compared to other SUVs in the same segment. It accelerates with precision when needed and is also entertaining in the sense that we attempt to experiment with every function and features that the SUV has to offer, at every red light.

Then onto the highway we drove. Despite only having 148hp and 280lb-fts of torque, we were shocked to know that the CX-5 speeds like a boss. When driven from a complete stop, we never felt any struggle in accelerating. When at high speed, however, we find it tough to stop. There is that high inertia feeling that allows the CX-5 to cruise at high speed without needing us to floor the pedal.

All in all, the CX-5 is truly an amazing vehicle to drive. After some accessing on our test drive, we can also confirm that the SkyActiv technology returns an average fuel consumption of 61.4mpg. Clearly, this is an SUV you must not overlook.
