There is a rumour going around that Apple may be about to launch a new 8GB version of the Apple iPhone 5C in an attempt to turn around the flagging sales.
It was said that an email from the German carrier o2 brought news of the device which they say will comes in 509 Euros or $707, which is 60 Euros under the current 569 Euros for the 16GB version.
You do have to wonder how this handset would affect the sales of Apple iPhone 4S, which is the only Apple device to be offered in 8GB of storage. This handset is been given away for free when you take out a two year contract. The iPhone 4 is sold in China and India in the 8GB form.
It could make sense for Apple to want to replace the iPhone 4S and 4 with the iPhone 5C, the iPhone 4 and 4S use the old style dock connector and have 3.5 inch displays. If they dropped the iPhone 4S it would mean that all iPhones would be on the same platform, as Apple get ready to launch the iPhone 6.
Sales of the Apple iPhone 5C have not done as well as expected by Apple, as people chose to go with the iPhone 5S.
At around the same time last year Apple knocked off the iPod Touch 4th gen for $199 and launched the $229 iPod Touch 5th gen without a rear camera. This pointed to the 4th gen being removed ready for the WWDC, which meant that Apple could provide every iOS device with the iOS 7 update. So we could be seeing something along these lines with iOS 8 being exclusive to iPhones that have lightning.
It was said that at the time of launch last year, instead of Apple offering an 8GB iPhone 5C for $0, they would continue to offer the iPhone 4S for a limited period of time. Reports said that this could be until early on in 2014, so it would be about right.
Perhaps this is something that they should have done right from the beginning. However if they really want to sell the Apple iPhone 5C in large quantities then they are going to have to sell the handset for below $400 for the 16GB version.
