There are around 14 million Volkswagen Polos in the world, so the company must have a reputation that is rock solid. Well actually not entirely.
The Polo has pride of place thanks to German engineering, however the Supermini class has managed to get fancy. Cars such as the Renault Clio brought customisation into it, such as decals on the roof, stripes and interior bits that are coloured.
The Polo therefore needed some humour and Volkswagen needed to offer it with a mid-cycle facelift. They revised the front and back fascias along with adding in some colour. However it seems that the engineers then forgot the plans and focus returned to usual.
The refresh therefore didn’t bring many updates with it. It did come with Front Assist and City Emergency Braking and it does offer automatic post collision braking. There are new alloy wheels, these are 16 inch Portago alloys.
At the back there are less visual changes, tinted light clusters on the front and back, while the bumper does have some new lines. On the inside is the dark rhodium trim which is round the centre display. There is climate control and the test car we had was a nice cabin colour combination of black and grey.
The touchscreen was new but if you want satnav you have to pay EUR 500 more. Visibility is good and the pedals are sporty, as is the steering wheel. Noise is kept to the minimum and the car is easy to drive. The car will go from 0 to 100km in 10.8 seconds and Volkswagen say that it takes 4.7 litres per 100km.
So all in all there are not that many changes to the 2014 Volkswagen, however it does come with some features that are top of the class.
