“MINI Hatchback Comes With Misleading Fuel Consumption Figures”- Claims EPA

The Environmental Protection Agency has issued a warning to BMW over the misinformation on the fuel consumption described on the third-generation Mini Hatchback. Both the 2014 Mini Cooper and Cooper S had just been released and both vehicles cannot achieve the stated fuel consumption ratings.

In detail, the Mini Cooper S which runs on manual-transmission is revealed by BMW as capable of achieving fuel consumption ratings of 38mpg. However, EPA did an intensive test and discovered that the vehicle couldn’t achieve any better than 34mpg. Similarly, the Mini Cooper manual-transmission has ratings of 40mpg instead of the quoted 42mpg.

EPA is going hard on car manufacturers that are overselling their vehicles through using exaggerated claims which are mostly untrue. Just recently, EPA did a massive crackdown against Ford; Hyundai and Kia after all three carmakers took their fuel consumption ratings too far.

This should serve as a warning to other carmakers to not trick the consumers with falsified information. The whole point to an honest fuel rating is to save the planet, not to make profits.
