Most vehicles today are really sophisticated with new technologies that are meant to improve the overall performance and driving experience. Among them is the dual-clutch transmission (DCT), which is a common offering in most cars today.
The technology was first introduced some years ago and it was commonly utilized by high-powered performance cars. DCT is a lot like manual transmission except for the fact that they have two clutches and require no pedals.
Such architecture ensures that there is less delay in power when shifting gears. In detail, the DCT will start moving onto the upcoming gear. Once the driver shift to the gear, there won’t be any delay with power output, thus, ensuring a smoother acceleration. Clearly, this is an advantage over the manual transmission and the automatic transmission.
However, there are some concerns with the DCT not being as responsive as quoted lately. Both Ford and Volkswagen are two of the biggest DCT fans around. Despite that fact, drivers have been annoyed by the slight slowness when attempting to accelerate at lower speeds. VW cars, in particular, even jerk at times.
Also, DCT can never cater well to large engine capacities. It is built to optimize fuel efficiency through a combined method that is inspired by both automatic and manual transmissions.
In conclusion, DCT transmission makes a great alternative to manual transmission and a perfect replacement for automatic transmission. Of course, DCT is still too expensive to own which is why they are commonly offered in top-range models of a car.
