The 2012 Mazda Miata a.k.a MX-5 seems to be headed back in time, bringing back what made the original MX-5 a hit. It will also be the last model to carry the Nagare design language.
2012 Mazda MX-5 sheds weight
AutoCar.co.uk reports that the automaker may be heading back to basics, having the next Mazda MX-5 shed some of the weight it has gained over the past few generations with an ultimate goal of reaching a lean 1,000kg.
This will be accomplished by dropping the 2-litre engine for a 1.8, possibly bringing back the traditional soft top, switching to a lighter suspension system (no longer sharing with the Mazda RX-8) and finally replacing the hydraulic steering with electric.
With the lighter weight, the 6-speed manual Mazda Miata may also be slightly smaller in dimensions than its predecessor, however that still remains unconfirmed.
