Smartphones from China might be strangers in the global market but the latest Xiaomi Mi 3 is fast being recognized worldwide. The device is equipped with the some fine hardware but is it any better than the market dominator, Samsung Galaxy S5?
When comparing both devices, the first thing we noticed is the difference in screen size. The S5 has a slightly larger 5.1” screen that runs at 432ppi. The Mi 3, on the other hand, has a 5” screen that runs at 441ppi. The smaller screen size on the Mi 3 ensured that it is 2% sharper than the S5.
Furthermore, the Mi 3 is equipped with a large 3050mAh battery that is able to last so much longer than the S5’s 2800mAh battery.
Under the hood, it is a totally different battlefield. The S5 is powered by the latest 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801 processor with 2GB RAM and Adreno 330 GPU. While the Mi 3 is also equipped with an identical RAM size and GPU unit, it runs on the slightly older Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.5GHz.
Even on cameras, the S5’s 16MP rear and 2.1MP front is able to triumph against the 13MP rear and 2MP front shooters on the Mi 3. The former can record videos at 4K resolution while the latter is restricted to 1080p.
The killer blow is with the fact that the S5 is able to support microSD card storage of up to 128GB. Unfortunately, the Mi 3 has a fixed internal memory of 16GB with no external memory support.
While it may be a defeat for the Mi 3, Xiaomi can be proud of themselves as the gap between it and Samsung is not a big one. The company simply has the potential to offer something better than Samsung in the near future.
