Proton Quietly Removes Safety Features After Awarded Crash Safety Rating

In order to get the three star rating, Proton added the top tethers to the Proton Saga. The tethers were among other 10 safety enhancements, which include the front bumper beam, front doors, centre pillars, rear seat back support, additional reinforcement to the front and rear bumpers, front seat belt pre-tensioners, rear centre three-point seat belt and an addition of a front passenger airbag.

After obtaining additional stars, as opposed to only one-star rating in 2012, Proton is said to quietly remove the safety features. With the revelation of this shocking news, Proton explains that “the top tether was not a regulatory requirement for OEMs to fit in their cars at the point when the car was tested. Although we had complied with safety regulations and other required conditions in the country, we had overlooked in updating ASEAN NCAP on the omission of the top tether from the current Saga models.”

The carmaker further says that it is a mistake that was accidentally done, and they regret the miscommunication with ASEAN NCAP on the issue. To support its statement, Proton claims that the top tether does not affect the safety of Adult Occupancy Protection (AOP) as it is meant for the child seats.

Proton realizes that it is a serious issue and as a solution, the carmaker is offering current Proton Saga owners free installation of top tethers. Affected customers can call Proton Customer Care Hotline or email [email protected]
