We have heard reports that Samsung may launch the Samsung Galaxy S5 during the first quarter of this year. When the handset is revealed it will take over from the Samsung Galaxy S4. It has been said that Samsung have been looking at different possible designs for the handset and this includes the use of metal. Some people in the past have complained about the fact that the Galaxy range of devices has plastic backs.
With each new device to come from Samsung the handsets are slimmed down. When they launched the Samsung Galaxy S4 they had shaved off 0.5mmm in comparison to the S3, despite the fact that the device came with a larger screen. When the Samsung Galaxy S3 was launched this was 1mm thinner than its predecessor. It was said that this was possible thanks to the use of LDS technology. LDS means that the antennae can be put into the back of the handset instead of it having to be on the outside of the device.
ET News has suggested that LDS could be used in some Samsung Galaxy S5 handsets as this would be one way of slimming down the handset. This would also help to stop delays due to Samsung needing to tweak the antennae to get it to work in different countries.
An industry insider recently reported that “When we were developing the Galaxy S3, it took us more than three weeks to change the antenna frequency design for different countries and regions,” an expert says ET News. “As we began to use the LDS-type cases with built-in antennas, we could reduce the development time to 3-4 days.”
There is a downside to the inclusion of this type of technology as it is said that the tech can be susceptible to problems with communication and more so if the owner were to drop the device. The impact could result in the antennae between the layers of plastic being broken on impact.
