It seems like more and more automakers are seeing the benefit of having rearview cameras install instead of mirrors. BMW was at the CES show this year where they showed off their new BMW i8 concept.
One of the unique features about the BMW i8 is the rearview camera which will be replaced with a camera. The BMW i8 concept will be fitted with three cameras now. In fact, BMW is not the only model that will be ditching the rearview mirror. We have also seen Audi and Tesla hinting that they might also replace their mirrors with cameras in the future.
So is camera really better than a mirror? The rearview mirror has been an effective method but it has its flaws as well. Drivers that do not know how to adjust the mirror will end up having huge blind spots that can put the driver at risk if crashing into another vehicle.
Some people also say that rearview mirror affects the aerodynamics of the vehicle and creates wind noise at high speeds. Maybe it is really time for us to move on and go mirrorless.
