The XL1 Concept from Volkswagen is something worth being excited about as it looks to offer 111km/l with the diesel-hybrid powertrain. Yesterday, VW stole the spotlight again as they created the new XL Sport Concept.
Unlike the XL1, the newer XL Sport is going to be built for performance. To our surprise, VW revealed that the XL Sport will be powered by the 200 PS/134 Nm 1.2 litre Superquadro V2 engine developed by Ducati. The motor is regarded as the world’s most powerful 2-cylinder mill, and it is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch DSG transmission which runs on the rear wheels.
Applying the engine to the XL Sport will make the vehicle the fastest 200PS car in history. After all, the concept only weighs 890kg, thus enabling it to hit a top speed of 270km/h. However, acceleration is not truly impressive as the XL Sport achieves 0-100km/h in 5.7 seconds.
Nevertheless, the XL Sport has got all the features for it to drive at high speeds. It sports a super-aerodynamic body, extended rear spoiler and an adaptive rear hatch to ensure that the engine is kept cool at all times.
Of course, plenty has changed from the XL1 design. The XL Sport has so many air intakes while also being both longer and wider. The chassis comes with double wishbone suspension with a pull rod fixed upfront and a push rod configuration at the back.
All in all, the XL Sports is surely going to be a thriller in the automotive world. Then again, it is still just a concept and a lot has to be done before it is ready for production.
