Is The 2016 Volvo XC90 Still The Safest SUV Out There?

Just after receiving a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, the 2015 Volvo XC90 has been given yet another award and this time it’s a Top Safety Pick+ status from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) – the highest possible rating to be handed out by the US-based organisation.

The Volvo XC90 received a ‘Good’ rating in five seperate crash categories which includes side impact, roof strength, front small overlap, front moderate overlap and head restraint and seats tests. The vehicle was given a ‘Superior’ score by scoring a maximum six points when it comes to front-crash prevention capabilities.

The reason the vehicle did so well in this category is down to it’s updated Volvo City Safety system. This system allows the Volvo XC90 to freely brake from speeds between 19 and 40 km/h. “The independent testing result from IIHS once again highlights the exceptional nature of the work we do at Volvo Cars in taking car safety to a new level,” said Volvo Safety Centre director, Cecilia Larsson.

You could argue that the small overlap test is amongst the most grueling things a vehicle has to endure under the supervision of the IIHS. Dduring this test the Volvo XC90 was driven into an obstacle at a speed of 64 km/h. The vehicle passed the test with no problems. A report by the IIHS said that “measures taken from the dummy showed a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity.”

It was also announced in April that order books for the Volvo XC90 have been opened since then. Although the report stated that a local launch was due to take place for the third quarter of 2015, Volvo Malaysia have not said much about the vehicle’s arrival ever since. It had previously been reported as well that the Volvo XC90 will only go onto the Malaysian market in a T8 “Twin Engine” plug-in hybrid trim.
