Samsung is getting a lot of success with Android and they are known to be one of the most successful companies alongside Apple.
However trying to remain on top all the time does get boring and it has led to Samsung going back to experimenting with everything once again. They should instead be putting focus on what they already have and try to solidify that position. Now Samsung could be risking trial and error as they break out from relying on Android and going for their own in-house OS.
Recently during an interview with the VP for product of strategy for Samsung, the first use of their Tizen OS could be the first baby step to breaking free from Android.
Samsung could be looking to open up a new source of income from 3rd party app sales on their devices along with challenging Android and iOS.
Tizen has been developed by Samsung and Intel, the chipmaker. If they were to use Tizen then Samsung could stop being dependent on Google. If Samsung can take on and win over Android and iOS then they will dominate the mobile market.
However the chances of them doing this are slim and it is risky. You do have to bear in mind that they would need the support of app developers. If then have an OS that doesn’t have support, there is no way it could be a winner. We saw this with the BB 10 experience.
When it comes to wearable tech, Tizen has begun to work with the Galaxy Gear devices, while this is still in the baby stage and stability isn’t guaranteed, it does have growth potential.
There is also the risk for Samsung that someone else will surface and take steps that are advanced, looking at things this way it would be easier if Samsung protected their control over Android than enter into uncertain strategies within the market.
Samsung do have a lot to think about and while they do have innovative spirit, they should calculate the risks before taking giant steps.
