2014 VW Polo Review: Massive Upgrade From Predecessor

Volkswagen is probably the biggest automotive company in the world right now and there is no reason why it shouldn’t be. Even when it comes to creating an affordable small hatchback, VW ensures that it is built with quality and performance in mind.

Earlier this year, VW launched the latest Polo. The new set of Polo is built on the latest MQB platform and they all look sportier than ever. Among the changes to the design includes new bumpers and a repositioning of the daytime running lights. The entry level Polo retails at $15,990 while the high-end Polo 81TSI Comfortline 7 speed DSG can be obtained for just $20,790.

The Polo comes with a choice of 2 engines, 2 transmissions and 2 option packs. The first engine is the four-cylinder turbo direct injection petrol engine that comes with Stop/ Start technology as standard. It is able to offer 66kW at 4,400-5,400 rpm and 160Nm at 1400 rpm. Fuel consumption stands at 4.8L/100km regardless of what the transmission is. Speaking of which, buyers can choose from the manual or the DSG gears.

The second engine is identical to the above but instead of 66kW, the mill is able to produce 81kWat 4,600-5,600 rpm with a maximum toque is 175Nm at 1,400-4,000 rpm. On the DSG transmission, the engine can achieve 4.8L/100km while the manual variant stands at 4.9L/100km.

On the road, the Polo offers a pleasant driving experience. For a hatchback, the Polo continues to amaze as it is able to offer so much power when needed. On the downside of things, the Polo missed out on offering a navigation system and the Hill Hold Assist does not work well with the Start/Stop technology.

In short, the Polo ranks at the top in the small hatchback category. Upon testing the Polo, it left us thinking on if it will make a better car for the Italian Job film. That’s how good it is.
