FAQ

Why are spark plugs so important?

The engine cannot function properly without spark plugs – this small detail creates the spark to ignite the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber; roughly said, this ignition starts your vehicle.

Proper spark plugs help to achieve better engine performance, while faulty ones decrease fuel economy and affect engine work. Spark plugs have to be maintained and changed regularly, otherwise sooner or later your engine will suffer damages due to misfires and detonations.

What are the symptoms of a faulty spark plug?

  • Common symptoms of a broken or faulty plug include:
  • Trouble with starting the vehicle, hard car starts.
  • Poor fuel economy.
  • Rough idle.
  • Misfirings.
  • Slower acceleration.
  • Engine hesitating or surging.

If you experience one or more of these issues, it’s time to change your spark plugs.

When should I change spark plugs?

It depends on the type of plug you use. Copper plugs have a recommended replacement interval of 20 000 miles. Platinum plugs need to be changed every 50 000 miles.  Iridium plugs last the longest and can achieve 80 000 – 100 000 miles of usage before the replacement.

Spark plugs require routine maintenance and service. Operating under extremely high temperatures, spark plugs are prone to damage and wear, so you have to replace them regularly to maintain proper engine functioning.

How to choose proper spark plugs for my vehicle?

To find the right spark plug for your car you have to consider the following criteria:

  • Physical dimensions and characteristics (size, material, etc.).
  • Heat range.

Always check if the spark plugs you’re going to buy are compatible with your vehicle brand.

Important: never choose spark plugs by their visual appearance. Even if two plugs look absolutely identical and have the same length, diameter, thread pitch, etc., they can still be very different when it comes to their heat range.

What is heat range and why is it so important?

Heat range determines how hot the spark plug gets during engine operation. If you get a spark plug with lower than recommended heat range, it will lead to deposits buildup, and, as a result, fouling will occur.  If you get a spark plug with higher than recommended heat range, it will lead to preignition and sometimes even detonation and engine damage. That’s why it’s so important to buy the spark plugs with the heat range that matches the engine requirements – a proper plug will get hot enough to burn off the deposits and prevent fouling, but not too hot, to avoid preignition.

What is the best spark plug?

There are many tried and trusted brands that produce high-quality durable sparks, but the best spark plug is the one that is compatible with your vehicle brand and engine capacity.

Should I always buy the same brand of the spark plugs?

It is recommended to stick to the brand of the spark plugs that originally came in your engine. However, if you want to upgrade your spark plugs, for example, get platinum plugs instead of copper ones, you’re free to choose between many different brands available on the market. Just make sure that you use the same type of spark plugs.

What is the difference between copper, platinum, and iridium spark plugs?

  • Copper spark plugs are the cheapest and shortest-lasting ones – it’s a nice option for the vehicle owners who are tight on money.
  • Platinum plugs – mid-level option, durable, almost as good as iridium ones. Have a stronger spark than copper plugs.
  • Double platinum – have platinum discs on center and ground electrodes. Offer enhanced performance and durability. Important: do not use double platinum spark plugs unless it is recommended by your vehicle manufacturer.
  • Iridium spark plugs are the most innovative, durable and long-lasting ones, they are a bit pricey, but still worth the money. Iridium is considered to be the best material for spark plugs that offers the strongest spark.

Iridium and platinum are precious metals – they are hard and therefore have higher melting temperatures compared to the electrodes in copper spark plugs.

How many spark plugs do I need for my Chevy Silverado 4.8?

It depends on the number of cylinders your engine has. Vortec 4.8 is a V8 engine – it means your engine has 8 cylinders. You’ll need 1 spark plug for 1 cylinder, so the total amount would be 8.

Can I change Vortec Spark Plugs by myself?

If you have all required tools (torque wrench, ratchet set, spark plug wire puller, gap gauge, special pliers, etc.) and, what’s even more important, your engine has easy access to its rear bank, then you can try to change the spark plugs by yourself. If you don’t have tools and some experience – better ask an automotive technician for help.

What if I install the wrong plugs for my Vortec 4.8?

One of the most mistaken beliefs is that all spark plugs are more or less similar and interchangeable, so you can buy any plug you want and use it. But in fact, this tiny can cause significant harm to your engine because of its improper heat range. If your new plug is hotter than the original one, most probably it’ll cause electrode erosion and misfiring, preignition, or even detonation. If your new plug is colder than the original one, it will lead to misfiring and rapid fouling.

Spark plugs manufacturer says I have to gap the plugs, how can I do that?

Each spark plug has a gap between the center and side electrodes. You have to adjust the distance (gap) between the electrodes so that your plugs fire efficiently. You’ll have to use a special tool called feeler gauge – it will help you to measure the gap widths.

First of all, you have to check your owner’s manual and find the recommended gauge (the distance between electrodes). Select the correct number on your feeler gauge. Using this tool, bend the electrodes and adjust the distance between them. Make sure that the gap between them is not too wide or narrow – to do that, run the gauge through the gap.

If you cannot or do not want to gap the plugs, you can buy already pre-gapped ones.

  1. Hi, I have 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and I heard too many people complain about bosch coppers. Recently I experienced rough idling considering it has over 230,000 miles on it and I seldom use it anymore due to covid19. When I started it up and you can feel the it right away that this Vortec 4.8 enngine is running very rough. I just thought it is time to replace my plugs since it has over 20,000 miles since I last change my copper plugs. A friend of mine suggested to use an iridium type of plugs and seems to be reasonable enough to upgrade. I’d like to try it, once I get the chance to visit my local store. Probably, I’ll provide a review later about it.

    • These iridium type of spark plugs are best for Vortec engines. It will increase your change interval to 100k miles. You will see better combustion, lower emissions with better fuel economy and added horsepower. You will experience this especially in situations like climbing hills, or hauling at the same time a comfortable driving experience.

  2. I can feel more engine power! I replaced to an iridium type of plugs for my Vortec engine. There is an extra power every time I climb the hills. Even though it is more costly, but you will feel what you pay for. I think the engine is more responsive because my truck used to have delay in acceleration. It seems like a tuner built in the spark plugs. It is highly recommended.
