Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 5.0 Update Guide

The old Samsung Galaxy S3 might have been retired from any further support by its manufacturer but that didn’t move the S3 users one bit. This is because S3 users are able to remain relevant thanks to the aid of third-party developers.

As a matter of fact, S3 users can now update their device to the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop. Independent developers have created the custom ROM of the Android 5.0 Lollipop and it is tailored for the GT-i9300 Samsung Galaxy S3.

On the downside of things, the ROM is still uncompleted. In other words, there are still some bugs plaguing the custom Lollipop. In detail, they involve the radio, camera, sensors, internal & external storage, Wi-Fi, GPS, graphics and screen off. Of course, there will be an update coming to address the issues and S3 users can still install the ROM now.

Pre-requisites

– The ROM is for the Galaxy S3 with model number I9300 only.
– Ensure the phone has at at least 80% battery charge to prevent unexpected device shutdown while installing the ROM.
– Back up data and settings using a recommended custom recovery tool, like ClockworkMod(CWM) or TWRP, as it creates a complete image of the existing phone setup.
– Verify correct USB drivers for the phone are installed on the computer
– Ensure that the device is rooted with CWM recovery installed and its bootloader is unlocked.

Flashing Instruction

1. As the ROM is in Nandroid Backup format, you can install it by restoring the backup from your SD card backup folder.
2. Extract the downloaded ZIP file and copy the ROM back-up file from ‘/sdcard/clockworkmod/backup’ to the desired location on your phone.
3. Now boot up your phone in recovery mode.
4. Perform a full data wipe (except if you’re running previous versions of this ROM)
5. Finally, restore the nandroid backup which you copied earlier and then flash the downloaded kernel
