WP7 Devices Like Nokia Lumia 800 Won’t Upgrade To Windows Phone 8 Later This Year (Rumor)

While the Nokia Lumia 800 and other upcoming Windows Phone 7 devices look set to take the Microsoft mobile OS platform to new heights, buyers interested in the current generation devices may be put off by the latest rumors.

Nokia Lumia 800 & Other WP7 devices can’t upgrade to Windows Phone 8?

While we are confident that current generation Windows Phone 7 devices will continue to get their upgrades right up to Tango, very little is known about Windows Phone 8 “Apollo”.

Apollo is believed to allow manufacturers to build “superphones” that can take on the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S3. However according to Eldar Murtazin, dubbed the James Bond of smartphones by Engadget, we may not see Windows Phone 7 devices be able to take part of these abilities. IntoMobile explains:

“Last night we had a quick chat with the Editor in Chief of Mobile-Review on Twitter and he suggested that today’s Windows Phones will be left in the dust come September when Apollo is due to take the spotlight. Now yesterday we posted a story that said Windows Phone 8 will run Windows Phone 7.5 apps, but Microsoft wouldn’t say anything further about how developers will write apps for Apollo.”

So if all this is true, come the end of the year when the first Windows Phone 8 devices are expected to launch, we could see the current crop of Windows Phone 7 devices left without an update less than 10 months since their release.

More on this as it develops.
