Dual-Core Sony Ericsson “Kumquat” Android Renamed Xperia U [PICS]

It was less than a week ago when images of an upcoming Sony smartphone with the codename ST25i “Kumquat” leaked on to the Web (image below). It boasted a 3.5-inch qHD display, 1GHz dual-core processor, 5-megapixel rear camera and an unknown version of Google’s Android.

Sony Ericsson Xperia U is the STi25 Kumquat

Well it now looks like we won’t have to keep calling it the Sony Kumquat anymore as a document found on Indonesia’s telecom authority website has the ST25i listed as the “Sony Ericsson Xperia U.”

Unfortunately not much else can be said about the device but given that it only packs a 5-megapixel camera we can be sure it is not a flagship model. If anything it is likely an mid-level Android to bring dual-core processors to the masses. We have been seeing a few of these this year starting with the HTC Primo which was a mid-entry Android but with integrated Beats Audio technology (Beats was originally only available in higher end HTC handsets).

No word yet on when the Sony Ericsson Xperia U will hit the market but it will likely happen after Sony absorbs Ericsson and this dual core Android is released as just the Sony Xperia U.
