Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Feature: Wink To Unlock

Face Lock is a fun concept and was introduced in Android Ice Cream Sandwich as a security feature but it could be tricked into unlocking. It had been designed to unlock after recognizing your face, but you could trick it into thinking a photo was your real face. Another problem with the quirky software was that is never locked out, even after numerous failed attempts.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean features: Improved Face Lock

Google has addressed these issues and tweaked the Face Unlock on the latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update. They added a feature called “Liveness check” which makes sure you are real before unlocking the device, if this option is ticked. What users now have to do is blink during the facial recognition process, after all a photo can’t do this. This is meant to enhance the security of the app, well in theory at least.

Another tweak has been made to Face Unlock in Android 4.1 Jelly Bean which will cause the app to lock the device if there have been too many failed attempts. This means you cannot hit the power button a couple of times to get back in, now users have to complete the unlock method to get back into their device. Face Unlock should now be more secure, providing you check the option for it to perform a liveliness test, due to the fact that it not only has to find eyes but it also has to determine whether you blink.

So flirt with your device and give it a wink to unlock it, or maybe it will be expecting a kiss next?
