Android & Apple Get Married: Mac Caught Running Android Apps With BlueStacks

There is no love lost between users of Apple and Android. But one start-up seems to be on a mission to bridge the gap so that everyone can join hands before walking off into the sunset. During the Google I/O, BlueStacks staged a mock-up of a wedding between Apple and Android for the launch of their Android App Player for the Mac. This is the software that will bring 400k+ Android apps onto the iOS platform.

BlueStacks runs Android apps on Mac

The alpha release of BlueStacks is available for free on the website of start-up and allows users of Android to run apps on the Mac. This means that they could download Angry Birds or Temple Run or even Evernote on BlueStacks or sync apps that they already own through the Cloud Connect app and run them on the Mac.

The release for Mac is a follow up to the release for Windows platform which saw users downloading and playing apps for Android on a Windows PC. This version sold like hotcakes when it was released in March and was downloaded one million times in only nine days. The key to the success of BlueStacks is the ability for it to run Android apps that are graphic intensive on computers using the patent pending tech called Layercake. This allows apps of Android to run on x86 based computers and this includes any apps that were written for the ARM processor.

The CEO of Halfbrick Shaniniel Deo said that the technology from BlueStacks appealed to everyday users and also developers as they would not have to modify apps or port them onto a new OS. This means that anyone who has developed apps for Android would not have any heavy lifting to do.

The same applies for the Mac release of BlueStacks and the company announced the launch today along with a number of developer partners, which includes HandyGames, Pulse and Creative Mobile. The next release, which is said to be coming soon, will further expand their partner roster and the team have been wooing developers at I/O in full force.
