HTC EVO 4G LTE Review: The Good, Bad & Ugly

Thanks to the release of the EVO 4G which was the first phone on the Sprint network to have 4G, HTC have been one of the favorites in the Sprint line up of phones for sometime now. So could the HTC EVO 4G LTE be Sprint’s best ever phone to date?

HTC Evo 4G LTE Review

The latest design is fantastic as it comes from previous models and it retains one of HTC’s well-loved trademarks, the soft touch shell of anodized aluminium complete with plastic cover and kickstand built in. The same color scheme is there, red and black, but there is a touch of added flair courtesy of the silver band around the phone which provides the classy look of a Blackberry.

The camera is a a big improvement as well. At 8-megapixels and coming with its own customized software and image processing chip, it allows owners to capture four frames each second when used in continuous mode. What sets the camera apart is the fact that it can capture both video and photos, at the same time. There is also the addition of a dedicated button on the phone giving quick and easy access to the camera.

The 4.7-LCD screen is also another important improvement. It is beautiful, rich in color and brighter than other smartphones in its range. It is a pleasure to watch video and browse the web on the Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE. Text is sharp and emails are very easy to read.

The handset comes packed with plenty of storage, 16GB on-board and the option to boost this up by another 64GB via an SD card slot (not available in the international HTC One X). The 1.5GHz processor is dual core and ensures snappy results when multi-tasking while blowing away the Tegra 3 quad-core chip in benchmarks.

If there was anything disappointing, it would be the HTC Sense overlay on top of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. There are a couple of tweaks we noticed when comparing it to the Samsung Galaxy Nexus which runs stock Android 4.0. For starters, if you are a power user you will notice that the HTC EVO 4G LTE is more aggressive when it comes to closing background apps. HTC has acknowledged this and states it is to improve battery life. Other issues are some of the tweaks HTC had done to the EVO 4G LTE to make sure it got past US customs after the recent Apple infringement lawsuit. According to TheVerge, features like the popup window “Complete Action Using” have been removed and replaced by less convenient options.

Overall, there is no doubt the HTC EVO 4G LTE is the best Android smartphone on Sprint right now. So if you’re due for an upgrade, don’t hesitate to jump on one.
