Samsung Coy On Android 4.0 Updates, Galaxy S Nightmares Return

While 2012 seems to be a good year for Samsung, with the Samsung Galaxy Note and Samsung Galaxy Nexus being one of the most popular new smartphones on the market, while the Samsung Galaxy S2 still selling incredibly well, it appears bad habits die hard.

Samsung Galaxy Note Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update delayed to Q2

It was just over a year ago when Samsung found itself in hot water with the rollout of the latest Android updates for the original Samsung Galaxy S phones (Vibrant, Fascinate, Captivate, Epic 4G). The Korean manufacturer created quite a stir by announcing that the major Android update at the time was just around the corner but instead stretched on for months with no signs of releasing it. Basically, Samsung upset a lot of US customers with the whole Galaxy S debacle and many swore to avoid Samsung ever again.

Things however quickly changed when Samsung released the Nexus S, the only Android 2.3 Gingerbread smartphone at the time. Their reputation of untimely updates and false promises were quickly forgotten and their credibility was further strengthen with the release of the Samsung Galaxy S2 and then the Galaxy Nexus. Well it looks like Samsung may still be up to some sneaky tactics, as JR Raphael of ComputerWorld points out. Here is an excerpt from Samsung’s latest press release about the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update which brags about the Galaxy S2 and then about what we can expect for the Galaxy Note:

“Today, we are proud to announce that we will be offering a Premium Suite upgrade for Galaxy Note users worldwide from Q2. The software package includes extra multimedia features and a range of new S Pen optimized applications in addition to an OS upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.”

Now what Raphael points out is that “buried in those oohs and ahhs are six characters that spell out this press release’s real news”… it mentions “from Q2”. Now this contradicts the December 20th press release by Samsung which is still available on Samsung’s website:

“Samsung Electronics plan to provide the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for Galaxy devices. The platform update for Galaxy S II and Galaxy Note will start in the first quarter 2012, and other Galaxy devices will soon follow.”

In what appears to be a positive message for Samsung Galaxy Note users, Samsung has in actually failed to live up to its promised and delayed the deadline to Q2 while spinning it to sound good. ThisĀ  gives them another 3 months to roll out Android 4.0 for the humungous phone/tablet. hybrid.

We’re sure former Samsung Galaxy S owners will not be surprised by this.
