Left 4 Dead 3: New Levels Were Undergoing Testing Approximately 6 Months Ago

A Redditor who goes by the name of ReaverXai recently toured the offices of Valve and a photo that was taken there sparked a great deal of excitement among fans.

The focus of the tour was merchandise on show, artwork that is being produced and showing off a cool office environment. The photos were posted on the subreddit Dota 2 and they were posted to show off the office tour along with revealing information about the merchandise that would be going on sale. However, one photo stood out from the others. it seems that a member of the Valve staff had a second monitor and this was showing a stream of updates which came from internal change logs and a ticketing system. In the list were test strings which came from the developer Ted Carson and they got fans very excited. These were:

“[Source2] Changed L4D3′s test_networking unit test to use the devtest level again. Ran assert-free…
[Source2] Restored L4D3′s devtest unit test. Ran locally 6 times without an assert. There may be so…”

This led fans of the Left 4 Dead series believing that there is going to be a follow up game in the franchise. Fans have taken this as solid proof that the game is under development.

The text does call out Source 2 engine, which suggests that the game could be closer to release. Valve developed the Source engine in 2004 with Counter Strike: Source, followed up with Half Life 2 and the engine has been used actively since. The engine was designed for first person shooting games but has been modified and today it runs games such as puzzle, RPGs and side scrollers.

In 2012 ValveTime did reveal Source 2 was being made. Gabe Newell confirmed the development of Source 2 and said that Valve was waiting for a game they could launch with it. He said that it would be a new engine and not just a rehash of the existing one. More evidence came to the foreground when a mailing list was discovered and this revealed leaked screen shots of Half Life 2, Left 4 Dead 3 and Source 2.
