When it comes to giving the best care to your car, there is always that debate on whether nitrogen is better than air for your tyres. The answer to that is yes and here’s why.

Air itself is a compilation of different types of gases. As a result, the air pressure that is pumped into your tyres won’t be consistent. This is something where nitrogen excels. It is stable and consistent with its density.

Then, there is the element of moisture, which is present in air. While it might depend on the humidity level of the geographic location, the fact that there is moist will affect the performance of the tyres. For instance, when the tyre gets hot from the road friction, they expand a lot due to the moisture inside.

Nitrogen on the other hand, has very small moisture value. It does not expand the tyres when things get hot, thus, ensuring that grip is maintained at all times. In figures, the moisture value has to be at 15% for optimum performance.

On a final note, air is really prone to leakage. If you leave the car behind for a couple of days without running, you will notice a drop in you tyres’ pressure. Nitrogen has a similar characteristic, although, it will take a long while for it to leak.

While nitrogen might be better than air, it is difficult to find a service centre which actually offers the gas as an option for your car’s tyres. Street cars today are more than capable of offering grip on the road as they are tuned to support air.
