The talk on the upcoming iPhone 6 is on a gradual incline over the internet with the latest suggesting that Apple’s 2014 flagship will be having a sapphire face. In other words, the screen of the much anticipated smartphone is going to be stronger, harder and more scratch resistant with the new Sapphire material.

Apple has recently revealed the $578m project to open a plant in Arizona with a partnership with GT Advanced Technologies in a move to artificially produce the harder-than-rock material. The sapphire built was introduced on the Touch ID Fingerprint scanner on the iPhone 5s. While it is not equipped on the latest iPad Air and Mini, many suggest that this could be due to insufficient sapphires to meet its demand.

The sapphire can be really costly to materialize into a screen. However, if Apple plans to use it on its future product, then the mass order can see the cost going for less. We might still see a slight increment in the price tag of the products. In a move to lower down production cost, the partnered company GT is hastening the development of its large capacity Advanced Sapphire Furnaces (ASF) that can produce high volume manufacturing to consistently meet a minimum level of capacity.

The project to build a plant can prove to be fruitful for the people of Arizona since Apple will be looking to hire 700 people for the plant’s operation and an overall of 2000 positions for the entire project.
In today’s smartphone, we can name a few of our friends carrying a functioning smartphone with a crack screen. While that implies the weak and fragile characteristic of today’s phones, we can see the problem solved in the coming years.
