AT&T Nexus 6: Steps To Escape The Carrier Bondage

The all-new Google Nexus 6 is one super powerful device but unfortunately, it is too costly for consumers to shop for the unlocked model. Thus, most buyers got their device from a carrier and are suffering from the telco’s softwares.

Well, there is a way to turn your carrier-locked Nexus 6 into and independent Nexus 6, at least for the AT&T variant. For starters, you will need a plastic fork to erase the AT&T logo at the back of the device. We’ve tested it and it works, although, you have to be really careful as applying to much force can leave a dent on the cover.

Then, you will need to root your device. Once done, this will give you access to the system’s files and folders, thus, allowing you to remove the AT&T custom boot animation and the carrier’s standard set of ringtones fixed on the Nexus 6.

The process is quick and simple. Head down to the root explorer and remount the /oem partition as read-write (RW). You will need to remove all the files in the partition, which will then see no traces of AT&T left on the Nexus 6. We highly advise you to perform this task on a computer to avoid any loss of core data.

On the downside of things, there is no way to remove SIM lock on the Nexus 6 without splurging. You will either have to pay the full device amount and/or buyout the contract before requesting AT&T for the unlock code, or pay up a third party entity that can provide you the code. Obviously, the latter is cheaper but there is a risk for getting conned.

Once you’ve completed the SIM unlock, the Nexus 6 you own will be free of AT&T for good. After all, what is the point in owning a device if it is chained to the carrier, not to you?
