Of course it isn’t the first time that we have heard the name Flounder. The name has been mentioned on the Chromium Issue Tracker and it has also has been identified with Volantis. Google are known for identifying devices with two separate code names for the device, named after a fish, the mainboard doesn’t have a specific pattern, for example the Nexus 7 2012 was known by the names grouper and nakasi.
We also heard earlier from a source that HTC would be making a new device with the name of the Volantis. The information showed the device as having a display of 8.9 inches and running on stock Android. However it wasn’t clear if the device would be joining the Nexus, Android Silver or the GPE family. Also back in March there was a rumour posted that Google could be planning a Nexus tablet with the display and it would be in production by July. It was said that the price tag would come in at around $299 and it would have a display of 2k. it turned out that the Flounder was a device AOSP and so we have confidence about the rumour this time around.
This does happen to be the first time that we have heard about the name Molly. We don’t have any outside information that connects to rumours about a device; however there is reason to think that this could be an Android TV. Keyguard Service is disabled, which removed the lockscreen and this isn’t something that would be done if it was a tablet or a phone. There are many references to Cast V1,PlayReady, stagefrieght and other media codecs. Then there is the use of Marvell SoC and this is seen in set top boxes. Of course it could be something else, but everything is pointing to an Android TV.
So it is looking as though there are obvious speculations but there is also a lot of evidence. It would not be too big a surprise to see a Nexus tablet made by HTC. It was said that they were thinking of having a retry at tablets. The connect to an Android TV is of course obvious, but then the timing would be perfect, so you cannot deny it in all likelihood.
