It seems that some people want a lightweight, fun to drive, real wheel drive car that is inexpensive to exist. However this would contrast with the car makers desire to make money. One of the bright spots of the future however in the rear drive market has come from Nissan when they showed off their IDx concepts. The cars were revealed at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show and it looks like they got inspiration for the design from the Datsun 510 and mixed it in with powertrains that are modern. But now it is looking as though some storm clouds could be gathering over the entire project.

We did hear that there was a production version going into plan, however things could have changed. The vice president of product planning at Nissan America said that the problem was with making a sports coupe car that would be profitable. Nissan had access to the rear wheel drive platforms, which of course are meant for the premium vehicles. If annual sales of 60,000 could be achieved then making a chassis for the IDx would not bring in the money, it was said that if the car goes into production it would be after 2016.

So the decision on whether to build it had been like a see-saw. A spokesperson said that the coupe would have to have a lot of support from consumers. So if you do want a more affordable rear drive car then you need to make sure that you let Nissan know.
