2014 VW Polo Review: We Need Power!

After so much anticipation, Volkswagen has finally released the all-new Polo Facelift. When we speak of facelift, it often relates to a new look on the vehicle. Unfortunately, the Polo has been utterly disappointing in this segment as the only thing that differentiates it from its predecessor is the new lower bumpers on the front and the back of the vehicle.

Then again, consumers should ignore that misleading name and open the hood with haste. The Polo is actually equipped with new engines and it is always exciting to learn on something new.

First, there is the 1L petrol that offers 59hp or 74hp, and it will be replacing the old 1.2L mill. Then, there is the 1.4 TDI variant that will replace the old 1.6. While the engines might be efficient, it lacks power overall.

In detail, the engines lack any essence of turbo. The Polo is an emberessment as it can sprint from knots to 100km/h in 15.5 seconds. This is really sucky especially when the Polo is utilized for long-distance driving. Heck, even on city roads, overtaking another car can really use and advertisement break.

This is why it is important to fork out that extra £525 for the 74hp variant. Then again, the car is still sluggish in every way. However, the driving experience is much more pleasant on the bigger engine since it comes with 3-cylinder. For a larger 1.4L engine, the Polo is also more efficient than the old 1.2L. It returns 58.9mpg and 108g/km of CO2.

Also, the perks to getting the Polo are the features that come with it. This latest hatchback is equipped with a larger gen-2 touchscreen that comes with MirrorLink. The system is basically a connectivity option for Android smartphones.

All in all, the Polo is a decent car to own for those who just got their license. We highly advise Polo drivers against driving their grandparents out on a Sunday afternoon. If any health problems were to arise, the German hatchback won’t be able to reach a nearby hospital in time.
