2014 VW Golf GTI Review: Smaller Engine Doesn’t Change A Thing

Volkswagen has launched the next-generation Golf GTi but unfortunately, the sports hatchback comes with a toned down powertrain. The 2L 4-cylinder engine generates 217hp and 258ft-lbs of torque, which is less powerful than the 276hp Astra VXR and the 247hp Ford Focus ST.

However, those stats are on papers. When on the road, the Golf GTi tells a different story. The car might take 0.6 seconds longer to hit 62mph than the Astra but it is much smoother when accelerating. This is partly owed to the 6-speed DSG transmission which relatively adds in an additional £1,415 to the Golf’s price tag.

The handling on the Golf is also more precise and responsive than its competitors. Volkswagen has equipped the hatchback with a new variable-ratio system that only requires two-turns to get from one lock to the other.

Putting the performance in figures, the Golf GTi accelerates from 0-62mph in 6.5 seconds. Also, it has a top speed of 152mph. It is worth noting that the hatchback only weighs 1351kg, which is much lighter than its predecessor. This further enhances the Golf GTi’s fuel consumption to 47.1mpg and carbon emission is dropped to a new low of 139g/km.

Of course, we recommend getting the Golf GTi with the Performance Pack that adds in 10hp, bigger brakes and trick electronic LSD. The Golf GTi retails at £25,845 and the Performance Pack cost £980.
