2014 Audi Q5 Review: A Bit More Tinkering & It’d Beat X3

The Audi Q5 could market itself as a clean diesel engine or as the first 4WD Ultra model to hit the UK, it doesn’t matter which angle it takes, as this Audi Q5 will love this engine. A few more handling adjustments might have put it in the same sort of league as the BMW X3, but it still packs a powerful appeal – so much so that there’s a new version coming out in 2016.

The Q5 has a 2.0-litre diesel engine and should come out in the UK in the middle of 2015. Audi has sorted out the saloon and the coupe and given low CO2 Ultra models, and has also given the Q range a bit of TLC by adding a new 2.0-litre engine.

This is the same engine as in the A6 Ultra and it’s got more power than the 2.0-litre diesel, as well as being quieter and more efficient. It may well be the first 4WD car to bear the Ultra badge, but Audi hasn’t decided if it’ll also have the clean diesel name as well.

The Q5 will have a seven-speed dual clutch S-Tronic gearbox, which gives good speed and good fuel efficiency (49.5mpg) and low emissions, all of which looks pretty good. There’s been some slight fixes to steering and a few more tweaks would have moved the Q5 up a few notches to compete with more rivals. As it is, the X3 stays in the lead overall.
